Getting Started with Metal Detecting

Before you head out into the field, here are the key things every beginner detectorist needs to know.

Get Permission First

All land in the UK has an owner. Always secure written permission before detecting on any land. It is illegal to use a metal detector on a scheduled ancient monument without permission.

Know the Treasure Act

Under the 1996 Treasure Act, you must report finds of gold/silver objects over 300 years old within 14 days. Make sure you are up to date with the Treasure Act. Visit Legislation.gov.uk

Choose Your Terrain

Fields, beaches and woodlands each need different equipment and techniques. Think about where you will be detecting most and look for an appropriate Detector for that terrain.

Pack the Right Kit

Sturdy boots, a digging trowel, gloves, finds bags, headphones and spare batteries are essential for every outing. And most importantly your metal detector!

Learn Your Signals

Practice in your garden first. Learn the difference between iron, foil, pull-tabs and coins by their audio tones. YouTube is a great starting point for learning different signals.

Join a Club

Local metal detecting clubs offer access to land, experienced guidance and a friendly community of detectorists.
